Hospitals in NH Consider Surge Centers for Rising COVID Cases
Hospitals in NH now have more COVID-19 positive cases than any other time during the pandemic, currently at 211, according to a report from WMUR.
With the numbers expected to climb, hospitals and health officials are saying that a surge center may have to be opened, but that is a last resort.
The report quotes Dr. Benjamin Chan, NH's state epidemiologist, as saying,
I think many of our hospitals are feeling the strain... I think many of our hospitals are dealing with staffing shortages.
The definition of a medical surge is, according to Public Health Emergency (phe.gov,)
the ability to provide adequate medical evaluation and care during events that exceed the limits of the normal medical infrastructure of an affected community.
Unfortunately, we are still very much in the thick of this pandemic. I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday on the phone who said although he was encouraged by the number of vaccines that are coming to the state this month, the numbers are not going to be nearly enough for everyone who needs one, so, that means, more positive cases will be popping up.
If there was ever a time that you or someone you know wants to become involved in the health care industry, this is the time to do it. No matter what your skill level, there are things that you can do to help. Not only hospitals, but nursing homes and long term care facilities as well.
