Hundreds of Mice from Filthy Conditions in Seacoast Home Surrendered at New Hampshire Animal Shelter
And more are expected.
Stratham, New Hampshire
Hundreds and hundreds of mice were taken to the NHSPCA in Stratham, New Hampshire by a man who lives in a home on the Seacoast of New Hampshire. According to the NHSPCA.org, the man was "overwhelmed" by the sheer number of mice in his possession.
Now, the NHSPCA is looking for your help.
The man who surrendered the mice initially brought 3 large plastic tubs that were very dirty. The tubs looked like they had not been cleaned. That initial intake was approximately 73 mice. Staff from the NHSPCA then went to the man's house and filled their vans with tubs of mice.
The non-profit said that they may be looking at over 1,000 mice, as they are reproducing at an alarming rate. The gestation period for a mouse is 20 days. The mice were not separated by gender.
These mice are not the kind you find in the field, in fact, these are pet mice, sometimes referred to as "fancy mice." They are social and prefer to be with other mice, but maybe not this many.
These kind of mice are nocturnal, so you may here them scurrying about when you are sleeping.
Some of the mice are available for adoption right now.
I would encourage people not to judge the man who brought the mice into the shelter. It sounds like a hoarding situation to me. Maybe the mice were once manageable companions and they just go out of control. Who are we to judge.
If you are interested in adoption, call the NHSPCA at 603-772-2921 or go their address is 104 Portsmouth Avenue in Stratham, NH.
