The current state of the economy has put many of us in a dire predicament.

While our salaries have, for the most part, stayed the same, the cost of everything keeps increasing.  The price of housing, food, gas, and other utilities has continued to rise.  This has led to many people needing to make some tough choices about how they spend their money.

Because of this, there aren’t many of us who aren’t dreaming about suddenly coming into a large sum of money.

Well, there is a chance you could already be in possession of an item worth millions without even realizing it.

It could be in your pants pocket, your purse, or that jar of change on your kitchen counter.

A dime worth millions of dollars

According to a recent article in Reader’s Digest, somewhere in the world, there are at least two 130-year-old dimes that are worth a fortune.

The specific dime is the 1894-S Barber Dime.  These dimes, made at the San Francisco Mint, were reportedly created specifically for a man named John Daggett.

Back in 1894, when Daggett was the superintendent of the San Francisco Mint, he supposedly had 24 of these dimes minted.

Why only 24?  One rumor is that Daggett had them made as gifts for banker friends who had heard there would be no dimes made that year.

In addition to giving them to banker friends, he made sure he gave a few to his daughter, Hallie.

According to the Reader’s Digest article:

Daggett gave three of them to his young daughter, telling her to save the coins until she was older. However, no sooner had he given this advice than she immediately used one of the dimes to fund an ice cream treat

While she spent one of the dimes, she reportedly held on to the other two until the 1950s.

Of the 24 minted, nine are known to still exist.  Seven of these remaining dimes are in the hands of private collectors.  The locations of the other two are unknown.

How much are they worth?

In 2016, one of these dimes was sold at auction.  It fetched just shy of $2,000.000.

What should you do if you think you have one?

The first thing you should do is take it to a reputable coin or antiques dealer.

If, once you have confirmed it is real, you decide to sell it, your best bet is going to be to put it up for auction.  This is the best way to ensure that you get as much money as you can for the item.

So keep an eye out for these very special dimes. And if you end up finding one, remember who told you that they were worth millions.
