If you’ve ever spent time on Maine’s waters, you know they can be so pretty one minute and very unpredictable the next. From that thick fog rolling right in without warning to changing ocean conditions, boating here really requires a pretty large dose of prep.

And we’ve been noticed for that. A new national study is good news for Mainers.

BoatBooker recently ranked the most storm-prepared boating states in America, and Maine landed at No. 5 overall.

Maine Ranked Among The Best for Boating Safety

The study looked at a few key factors, including boating safety regulations, U.S. Coast Guard station access, FEMA community resilience scores, and boating accident and fatality rates.

One of the biggest reasons Maine scored so well?

We are prepared! The community preparedness is the true reason why.

Maine earned a FEMA Community Resilience Score of 8.3 out of 10, the second-highest score among the top 10 states. That means, Maine people know how to get ready for storms on the coast.

As per the report, that shows a super strong local infrastructure and emergency response systems that help us all handle bad weather and other emergencies.

Maine also posted an accident rate of just 25.27 per 100,000 registered vessels, that means we are one of the safer states in the U.S. for boating.

The states that out ranked Maine were, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Mississippi.

“Maine’s ranking speaks to the value of investing in community resilience alongside federal infrastructure,” said BoatBooker founder and maritime expert Vukan Simic.

But even though Maine’s boating safety is among the best in the country, after all, even the most prepared state can’t always control the weather.
