4 Maine Bed-and-Breakfasts in Portland and Bar Harbor Named the Best in US

If you're thinking about your next vacation, you might want to pump the breaks on going to just a regular hotel and at the very least consider switching it up for a trip.

U.S. News & World Report recently released its 2024 rankings list for the best bed & breakfasts in the United States, with Maine landing some top spots.

The company recognized over 250 "bed-and-breakfasts, inns and small hotels across 17 destinations in the United States." So the fact that Maine got even more than one spot on the best-of list is huge.

U.S. News & World Report's ranking took into account several factors, including atmosphere, ratings, awards and even TripAdvisor scores. You can see more of their methodology here.

As for which Maine places got recognition? Both Portland and Bar Harbor were two of the 17 cities U.S. News & World Report focused on.

No. 1: Blind Tiger Portland - Danforth Street in Portland, Maine

Blind Tiger is actually in two locations in Portland. The one on Danforth Street is a federal-style mansion house, according to its website, and it was originally built in 1883 going through several transitions before becoming a bed-and-breakfast in 1993.

According to the Blind Tiger, the name "blind tiger" was a "common slang for an illegal spot where you could find a stiff drink," and they've carried that on in spirit with a unique place where you can gather and celebrate however you choose.

A recent TripAdvisor review noted it is a "beautiful, cozy and eclectic boutique hotel in the West End not too far from the Old Port, but far enough away to be quiet and peaceful. ... We especially loved the downstairs area with plenty of seating (we liked sitting by the fireplace) and a nice dining room and pantry for breakfast and snacks. Ample snacks, teas, coffees and a machine which made espressos, Americanos, lattes, etc. Breakfast was great, with many choices! ... We felt like we were in someone's home rather than at a hotel."

No. 2: Blind Tiger Portland - Carleton Street in Portland, Maine

The other Blind Tiger is an 1869 Victorian townhouse on Carleton Street, not far away from the Danforth spot, but also just as walkable to a lot of things in Portland.

A recent TripAdvisor review praised the spot and appreciated the "neighborhood feel of the Inn":

"From the moment we arrived, the staff could not do enough for us. They were helpful, pleasant and accommodating. The Inn itself clean and well appointed. We enjoyed the common areas with lots of available seating, books and a snack pantry. The room was spacious and inviting - especially the bed and linens. Breakfast was a cold bar and had a nice assortment of baked goods, muesli, granola, yogurt, coffee and espresso. We did not go hungry."

The website notes that there are 12 working fireplaces, 9 "carefully conceived" bedrooms and plenty of space to relax and hang out at this particular location.

No. 1: Balance Rock Inn in Bar Harbor, Maine

The trend of walkability carries on at this premier spot, and Balance Rock Inn highlights that it is a luxury and intimate space with gorgeous waterfront views.

The place is steeped in history and charm that dates back to 1903, according to the bed-and-breakfast's website, and is a AAA Four Diamond rated boutique hotel.

One recent TripAdvisor review was super wowed by the place.

"Place actually blew me away!! The only bad thing I can say is it ended too quick!! Very classy but yet so comfortable!"

No. 2: Bass Cottage & Ullikana Inn in Bar Harbor, Maine

Bass Cottage Inn & Ullikana Inn was named on the list, but if you take a look they are technically two different locations in Bar Harbor right next to each other. But just know they are owned by the same people.

Bass Cottage Inn's website states they are more like a "boutique hotel with B&B amenities" that is modern, chic and classic. The website also notes that the Inn was originally built in 1885 and is Bar Harbor's "oldest continuously operating inn." Another place to stay in Maine that's rich with history.

Similar to Bass Cottage Inn, Ullikana Inn's website states it was built in the 1800s and later turned into a boutique hotel. And just like the sister property brings luxury and relaxation with all the amenities you could want and charm of a unique place to vacation.

Again, the TripAdvisor reviews point out their enthusiasm for the place as well as its location in the area.

One review stated: "Inn is beautifully decorated with gorgeous stained glass throughout. Kind and personable staff. Location perfect for taking in the shops and walk along the water. Definitely a memorable experience to be repeated."
