Maine has plenty of room to spread out. I mean, this is one remote region.

The Pine Tree State ranks 43rd in the country for population density, with just over 1.38 million people calling it home. With numbers like that, you might expect a state made up almost entirely of small towns and mom-and-pop shops. While that's definitely part of Maine's appeal, the reality is quite a bit different.

Despite its relatively mall population, Maine is not struggling in the employment department. Many of the jobs available are with some of the largest employers, not just in Maine, but in the entire country.

I came across a list from the Maine Department of Labor highlighting the state's 25 largest employers. It offers a fascinating look at Maine's diverse economy and the locations of these major companies.

Many on the list come from the healthcare field, which makes perfect sense, considering how widely those services are used by the entire community. However, other categories are also well represented, such as retail, defense contractors, colleges, and banking—just to name a few.

What are Maine's Largest Non-Government Employers?

A few major brands, such as, Lowe's,��UPS, and Home Depot made the list. Those locations and companies can easily be found statewide.

It’s also great to see many locally owned companies on the list. Longstanding Maine businesses like Bath Iron WorksL.L. Bean, and other private institutions are represented.
