New Hampshire and Massachusetts Baby Name Laws: What New England Parents Need to Know

Every year the SSA releases it's list of popular baby names. If you are pregnant and you are looking for a unique name, make sure you know what the rules are for that in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Not all baby names are ok to put on the birth certificate.  Some have certain rules.  According to thebump.com, for the most part, you can name your kid anything you want, but if the name Jesus Christ is on your short list, you can't have that one.  It's already taken.

New Hampshire Has Just One Rule for Baby Names

If you are looking to name your kid using 100 or more characters in New Hampshire, you have to shorten it.  For example, if you want your kids name to be "Supercalifragilisticexpialadotious," with 3 more names of about that same length, you're gonna have to shorten it to say, maybe, "Super Cal."

Massachusetts Has This Baby Name Rule
Only letters found on the standard English keyboard may be used in baby names in Massachusetts. So sorry, no æ, ë or ñ.

Maine has no restrictions except for the National rules.  I've already mentioned Jesus, but you also can't name your kid King, Queen, Ill, Santa Claus, Majesty, Adolf Hitler, Messiah, the @ symbol or 1069.

America is not the only place where they place restrictions on naming a baby.  For example, according to usbirthcertificates.com, the name Sarah is illegal in Morocco.  In Portugal, if you want to name your baby Tom, you are out of luck.  Illegal.

Mexico has the most common sense when it comes to illegal baby names.  You can not, under any circumstances, name your kid...Circumcision.  Good call, Mexico, good call.
