I've learned a lot from my Dad. How to drive, how to change the oil, change a tire, mow and fertilize the lawn and fix a leaking faucet to name a few things.  I hope my kids have learned a lot from me. Father's Day is this Sunday and is a good reminder that New Hampshire dads are a different breed.

There are dads... and then there are New Hampshire dads.

You know the type. They can predict the weather better than most meteorologists, own enough tools to build a small town, and somehow know three different back roads that will save you exactly seven minutes.

Growing up in the Granite State comes with its own set of life lessons. Some, we would say are practical, like learning how to stack firewood, change a tire, or survive a power outage. Others might be a little harder to explain. It's the appreciation for hard work. The ability to figure things out. The understanding that if something breaks, you at least try to fix it before calling someone else.

New Hampshire dads aren't usually known for long speeches or dramatic life advice from what I understand.. Instead, New Hampshire Dads teach by example. They show up. They help. They work hard. And they somehow always have a flashlight, pocket knife, a multi-tool, duct tape or random piece of rope when you need one.

As Father's Day rolls around, we started thinking about all the little things that seem to connect people who grew up with a New Hampshire dad. The habits, sayings, skills, and traditions that instantly make you smile and think, "Yep, that's my dad."

Some of these might bring back memories of camping trips, fishing mornings, snowstorms, or long drives through the White Mountains. Others might remind you of the lessons you didn't fully appreciate until you got older.
