This Maine Intersection Needs a Traffic Light Worse Than Any Place in New England
One of my favorite places in New England is Ogunquit, Maine. What's there not to love?
It has restaurants, hip clothing stores, world class musical theater with the Ogunquit Playhouse and the Front Porch Piano Bar. (Be still my beating heart.)
BUT, the one thing that Ogunquit doesn't have is a traffic light in the heart of everything.
It's the intersection of Route 1, Beach Street and Shore Road. Yes, that's right. Three roads converge into the busiest section of town creating quite a situation for drivers.
The drivers coming out of Beach Street don't have a chance. I was coming from a lovely visit with the piping plovers on Ogunquit beach and found myself waving to all the pedestrians to go ahead and cross because the intersection ahead of me was non-stop.
Be Brave, Sarah
There was no waiting for a break in traffic. Summer in Mane has no slow down for the meek, so, off I went. I scooched up, up and up some more until another, less-daring driver coming down Route 1, slowed down and let me in.
If you are going from the beach to Jonathan's Restaurant, which I was, you have to remember to take the correct left turn back onto Route 1. Don't take a sharp left, you'll end up on Shore Road. OY! The humanity!
Here's video from the Ogunquit Police Department via Facebook. The cars look like ants!
The Front Porch Piano Bar Was Hopin'
The only thing that kept me sane during my time at the intersection was the mirth and merriment coming from the Front Porch's Piano Bar. The sounds of singing, laughing and all around joy around the piano made by time in that intersection from hell bearable.
So, try to keep me away, terrible intersection, from one of the most charming places on the planet. I will not be deterred.
See you around the piano.
