And the internet just lit up with the news that David Ortiz will retire at the end of the 2016 season.

This tweet comes from Ken Rosenthal, he knows his stuff and is tightly tied to the Major League Baseball community. I believe him to be a trusted source for information.

Ortiz turns 40 tomorrow, so we knew this day was close, I was just hoping it was later rather than sooner.

People on the internet are making a big deal about how he said back in 2014 that the public wouldn't know he was retired until he had already played his final game, clearly that is not how it's going down. Ortiz went on to mention Jeter and Mariano Rivera, basically Papi didn't want a farewell tour, well, he'll get one. Here's the quote from ESPN:

What Derek Jeter is doing is fine because he's Derek Jeter. What Mariano did is fine because it's Mariano," he said. "But I don't know if I'm going to go through all that. I'm not going to wake up and be like, 'I'm going to play this year and then not anymore.' To me, it's going to be how things go through the season and how I feel, and then I'm going to be like, 'Mama, it's over.' I'm going to let her know.

He's being called a hypocrite because of something he said in 2014. Who cares? Lets just hope he has a fantastic farewell season and the Sox win the World Series, send Papi out on top!
