Where Does the Battle Cry ‘Warriors’ of the New England Patriots Come From
What an amazing feeling for all of Patriots Nation to be, once again, the AFC Champions after they beat the Denver Broncos 10-7 in Denver!
After the game, Coach Mike Vrabel turned to his team and shouted 'WARRIORS!!!' Where does that come from?
Did Tom Brady Start a New Celebration Phrase?
It's almost embarrassing to say that I don't remember which Superbowl win it was when Tom Brady was on the podium celebrating with the rest of the team. It was the first time that I heard him cry, "LET'S GO!" At the time, I thought, "why is he shouting 'let's go?' They've already won. They can just relax now." That's how my brain works. Whatever the case may be, it was fitting at the time and it caught on everywhere.
After that win, if you had an important meeting that you had to psych yourself up for, you may have shouted, "LET'S GO." If you just won $1,000 on a lottery ticket, you may have shouted "LET'S GO!" Now, there's another phrase that may just take over.
The Patriots May Have Just Started a New Celebration Phrase
The latest celebration hype phrase may have come from one of my favorite players on the team, Mack Hollins. First of all, Mack doesn't wear shoes. You will see him with cleats on the field, but otherwise, he's barefoot.
With every entrance, Mack will dress up as some sort of character and before the AFC Championship game in Denver, he put on a leather vest, got three bottles and walked in, barefoot as always, chanting, "WARRIORS, COME OUT TO PLAAAAAAAAYAY!"
When Coach Vrabel shouted "WARRIORS!" in the locker room and on the podium after the AFC win against the Denver Broncos, it fired up the whole team. Could this be the birth of a new battle cry?
Mack and Mike were making a reference to the 1979 movie, the Warriors.
The movie has become a cult classic. The plot was about several street gangs in New York all trying to take down the "good guys" in the movie, The Warriors from Coney Island. A scrappy lot of guys who only wore leather vests with no shirts. Maybe that's why it was so popular?
Michael Beck, the lead actor in the Warriors went on to play the lead in another Classic in 1980, Xanadu with Olivia Newton John.
This Patriots team is so fun to watch. For the first time that I can remember, I am cheering for the coach as much as the players. The team reminds me of the comradery that Terry Francona had with his players in the Red Sox 2004 team that won the World Series.
