In this year's Topsfield Fair Giant Pumpkin Contest, Hiram Watson of Farmington, NH took home the $5,000 prize with a 1,900 pound PUMPKIN.(Regular font size doesn't do it justice). If you want proof that it's a small world, if you've ever bought apples at my parents' Gonic farm stand, they are all picked at Mr. Watson's orchard. How do you like those apples?

Growing these monsters requires a lot of work and many of the tricks of the trade are kept secret by those in the know, but I am aware of a few of the practices. First, the seeds are all extremely specified as you can see here on this official weigh off board and I know a lot of calcium is used for the diet.

Even though you could probably bake 10,000 pies with this year's winner, I wouldn't recommend it. You would probably need a jack hammer and a crew of twenty with shovels and mining helmets to prepare it. And despite an improvement in the bone density of anyone willing to try it, I guarantee the flavor would be almost unbearable.
