NH Tick Season Here Until Nov and This Mammal Is Our Best Defense
I don't know about you, but I think the opossum is wicked cute. Sure it hisses at you like a demon from the depths of hell, but still. When it's all curled up and sleeping in that pile of trash, all I can say is, "Awww......."
Turns out, the opossum attract and kill thousands of ticks per acre, per week, according to Return To Now website. That means, they are one of our best allies in stopping the spread of all those nasty diseases that you can get from ticks, like, Lyme disease.
The opossum is not the only creature that eats ticks, squirrels and mice do as well. From now on, I will not be killing any mice, squirrels or opossum.
The report goes on to say that opossums kill almost every tick that occupies them and they kill over 5500 ticks per week.
The report states,
Opossums are extraordinarily good groomers it turns out – we never would have thought that ahead of time – but they kill the vast majority – more than 95% percent of the ticks that try to feed on them.
So, not only are they cute, but opossum keep us healthy too!
