Portsmouth NH Retires Its On-Street Fire Alarm Box System

(Portsmouth, NH) - After 134-years, the Gamewell Fire alarm System in Portsmouth is being inactivated today.

The red fire boxes like this one, which was part of the old Dover system, will soon be removed from around Portsmouth.

First installed in 1884, the Gamewell system grew to over 300 on-street and master boxes across the city.

With the advent of home phones and then cell phones, the need for the call boxes has waned over the past several decades.
