I had no idea what the deal is with National Donut Day, until now.

National Donut Day is observed on the first Friday of June each year.

The Salvation Army created the day in 1938 to honor those who served doughnuts to soldiers dating back to the first World War.

It was during that war that Salvation Army volunteers went to France to meet the needs of the soldiers by providing them with baked goods.

Due to the difficulty of providing freshly baked goods, doughnuts became an efficient option. And the soldiers quickly took to them. Donuts became an essential part of the soldiers equipment pack.

"I'll have a coffee and a doughnut" is probably the most uttered phrase every single morning. People probably spend more time in lines at the local donut shop drive-thru than they do stuck in traffic on the Spaulding Turnpike.

And if you've got your coffee and donut while your stuck in traffic, you're ahead of the game.
