This is Only a Test — Seabrook Conducts Drill Wednesday

Seabrook Station will be conducting a test of its sirens on Wednesday morning in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Plant operator NextEra Energy said sirens may be heard as part of the test, and there may be increased activity around the plant off Route 1.

New Hampshire Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Community Outreach Coordinator Vanessa L. Palange told Seacoast Current that this is part of a series of a regular cycle of drills. A similar drill took place in December.

According to Seabrook Police, only a siren near the plant will be sounded. Sirens within the 10-mile emergency zone will not be activated.

NextEra Energy spokesman Peter Robbins told Seacoast Current that the intention of the drill was to test the response of various agencies that work with the plant. Additional activity around the plant will be at a minimum, according to Robbins.

Robins said the drill started at 7 a.m. and will last all morning.

Seabrook Unit 1 has operated since 1990 and is the second largest nuclear plant in New England. In 2019, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission renewed the plant's operating license through 2050.
