What was once considered a treasure here in New England, is now the subject of an environmental rescue mission.

The Merrimack River stretches 125 miles and provides drinking water for many North Shore Massachusetts cities. Unfortunately, after years of mistreatment and pollution, the river nowawdays looks more like a junkyard which doesn't lend itself to quality drinking water.

The Clean River Project, a non-profit dedicated to cleaning up the river, has pulled 64 cars from the river and has also pulled safes, refrigerators and about 8,000 tires over the years.

Without immediate funding though, the Clean River Project may soon be done pulling cars from the Merrimack. The Massachusetts Environmental Trust will only pay for 20 more cars to be pulled.

What a sad state of affairs for the Merrimack River. Hopefully they can find the funding from the state and surrounding towns and get this river back to its glory days.
