Who Stole Flag Honoring Fallen NH State Police Trooper?

Greenland Police are looking for whoever stole the thin blue line flag hung on the Ocean Road overpass less than a mile away from where NH State Police Staff Sgt. Jesse Sherrill was struck and killed.

The flag was donated by a resident to hang on the overpass fence as a procession carrying Sherrill's body to a Dover funeral home passed underneath.

"We purchased special C clamps to hold it due to the immense size (and wind that we know can be very gusty on the highway). We stood proudly beside that flag, saluting, when SSgt Sherrill's body was escorted to the funeral home and planned on leaving it in place until after his funeral, Greenland Police said on their Facebook page.

But it was stolen Monday night from the overpass sometime between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., according to police.

"This isn't just about a stolen flag ... it's about our shared loss and community unity," Greenland Police said on their Facebook page.

The department asked anyone who saw or heard anything to contact them so the flag can be put back into place for Sherrill's Celebration of Life on Wednesday in Manchester.

Police said they have received several calls about a male and female "messing with the flag around 5 p.m. but assumed they were fixing it.

"Thank you to everyone for so much support ... we couldn't do this without YOU," the department wrote.

Sherrill was working a construction detail early Thursday morning in the northbound lanes of I-95 near Exit 3 when he was hit by a tractor trailer.
