If you have ever driven in Downtown Boston and thought you might go insane because of the traffic, here are a few tips to deal with it.

Boston Traffic Sucks

I have had to drive to Huntington Avenue in Boston on several occasions. Each time I get in my car to go from NH, much like child birth, you forget how awful the pain is.

Huntington Avenue in Boston is a little more difficult, okay, a LOT more difficult to get to from New Hampshire than say, the TD Garden.  I felt like I was getting closer to my destination and the GPS said that I still had another 1/2 hour to go, which turned out to be another 45 minutes.  And, I could almost SEE the building I was heading to at that point.

I couldn't believe the amount of cars.  And what is with all the honking?  I don't think that's going to make the traffic go any faster.  It just seemed like the most miserable place to be.

The question of how to deal with traffic was posted on Reddit and there were many, MANY people who echoed my frustration.

  • "It's horrific and frustrating. I live 20 miles from the city and it takes me an hour and a half to drive in."
  • "Traffic is absolute hell."
  • "If you get stuck behind the 8am 'wave' of traffic it is SO much worse than leaving earlier."

Here are some of the tips inspired by the Reddit post:

1.  By far, taking public transportation was the number 1 answer to relieve the stress of driving into Boston yourself.  That comes with some challenges too like - people sleeping on you, people who don't wear deodorant on a crowded car, people... in general.

Overall, however the PRO's of taking the train out-weight the CON's.  For instance, if you take the train, you can immerse yourself in your latest Netflix obsession, read a book or listen to music.  The time will fly by.

2.  Be at work by 7am.  Not hit the road by 7am, but be at work by then.  Otherwise, wait until 10am to start your commute.

3.  Take an e-bike or ride a scooter or skateboard.  People are doing that all over Boston and there is nothing more frustrating than having the biker make it to their destination faster than you in your car.

4.  This one is a little extreme, but you might want to consider moving closer to your job so you can walk to work every day.  You may have to spend about 80% of your take home pay on a little tiny, itsy-bitsy apartment, but you won't be thinking that you are soon going to pull your hair out if you have to inhale exhaust fumes for another minute.

Bonus Tip for Boston Drivers

Remain as calm as you can.  I know someone who is very, very near and dear to my heart and I swear, he makes things harder on himself by getting upset by every other driver on the road.  #itsmyhusband #blesshisheart

Whatever you decide, I feel you, Boston Commuter, I feel you.  May the Force Be With You and for the love of GOD, be patient with the hose-bag next to you on Storrow Drive trying to cut you off.
