I don't know anyone who doesn't love a cookie.  I can just about say the same for everyone's favorite kind of cookie is chocolate chip.  There's nothing not to love about it.  The best ones are the original Toll House Cookie, in my opinion. Did you know that these joys of our lives was invented in Massachusetts?

According to newnengland.com, there was a beautiful woman by the name of Ruth Wakefield who was the owner of the Toll House along with her husband.  I know she was beautiful without ever seeing her because .... chocolate chip cookies, that's how I know.

Ruth and her husband bought the old 1709 house in 1930, located in Whitman, Massachusetts.  They wanted to turn the house into an Inn.  How can you have an Inn without cookies for the guests?  You can't.  That's why Ruth got cookin'.

Baker Didn't Mean To Make America's Favorite Cookie Ever

One day, Ruth was experimenting in the kitchen, (as we cooks do) and she decided to take a bar of Nestle semi-sweet chocolate and break it up.  She didn't know how it was going to turn out, but she went ahead and added the ingredients for her drop cookies; sugar, brown and white, brown sugar, vanilla and butter.  (so much butter!)

She then put the cookies in the oven and crossed her fingers.

When the cookies came out of the oven, she was surprised to see that the chocolate didn't melt all the way and gave the cookies an addictive quality that we have been hooked on ever since.

They were so good that somehow, the recipe was printed in a Boston newspaper.  I imagine that some gumshoe of the 1930's had one of these delights and exclaimed,

"I must get the word to the people about these delicious, addictive cookie concoctions right away!"

I'm not sure that was a direct quote, but this is what I imagine.

Nestle Prints This Famous Massachusetts Recipe on the Back of Each Bag

Nestle had to get permission from Ruth to put her recipe on the back of the bag and VOILA!  Family traditions were born.  I know that I use that recipe every time I make chocolate chip cookies.  I have tried other recipes and let's face it.  Any cookie is a good cookie, but there is nothing like the original.  Those always go the fastest in my family.

I add walnuts to my recipe most of the time.  You can get creative and add other things like salted peanuts or candied cranberries or mix with white chocolate morsels, but don't mess with perfection too much.

Let me know what you add to your cookies!  I'm always up for a cooking (and cookie) adventure.

Food You Would Miss If You Left Massachusetts

There are lots of famous foods that can claim “The Bay State” as their place of origin. It is the most densely populated of the New England states and was one of the 13 original colonies and 6th state to join the United States of America.
