The Classic TV Show ‘Bewitched’ Filmed in Salem, Massachusetts
Who didn't want to wiggle their nose like Samantha? I sure did.
There are certainly a lot of spooky places in Salem, Massachusetts. So much so, in 1970, the Classic TV show, 'Bewitched' came to town.
TV in the 1970's
If you were born in the 70's, chances are, you know the old TV show "Bewitched," starring Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha.
According to Salem State University Archives and Special Collections Facebook page, in 1970, the cast and crew of the show came to film a few episodes. Perfect for a TV show who's main character is a Witch.
The cast and crew all stayed at the famous Hawthorne Hotel, known for being very haunted.
The cast and crew also filmed in Gloucester, Massachusetts, right next door.
The House of Seven Gables and the Witch House and Salem Common were also filmed during that time.
The Salem, Massachusetts Episodes
The first Salem, Massachusetts Bewitched episode aired on October 8, 1970. The Mayor of the City of Salem at the time, Samuel Zoll declared "Bewitched Day."
The City of Salem erected a statue of Elizabeth Montgomery, the actress who played Samantha on the show on July 15, 2005. In 2022, the statue was vandalized. Someone sprayed red paint all over it. Authorities were able to power wash it and the paint was washed away, according to WCVB.
It's not the first time that the statue has received negativity. Many people, according to the WCVB report, think that the statue is making a mockery out of the Salem Witch trials, which was a very somber time in our history.
I have been to Salem many times and when you go outside of the month of October, it is a beautiful, picturesque New England town. If you go in October, it transforms into a tourist magnet. No matter when you go, it DOES have energy and spirit. It's one of my favorite places on the East coast.
