So far, close to 20 businesses and organizations in Rochester are participating with this new app. Many restaurants and stores are included as well.

According to an article at Fosters.com:

The app is called Distrx, and can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play. It uses iBeacon location sensing technology to give users information on various deals and events available in their proximity.

Distrx uses a "geo-fence," which means that visitors with the app will receive a welcome message as they enter the district, with a complete listing of all merchants. Then, using iBeacon technology, users entering a participating business receive a personalized greeting, which may include special offers, promotions, or upcoming events.

I don't know how new this technology is, but I'm surprised it's taken this long for a local city or town to take advantage of it. I don't use 90% of the apps on my phone, but this is one I'd certainly take note of.

And what a great tool for local communities to advertise all they have to offer! From local businesses, events, all that is going on.
