The winter jackets are unpacked and the snow shovels are out because blizzards are just around the corner in New England.

Mount Washington always gets the first taste of snow each year, but when does the first snow usually fall in New Hampshire? The fine folks over at Climate.gov have the answer.

According to their map of historic date for first snow, New Hampshire usually sees snowflakes sometime in October. This holds true this year as the northern part of the state has already had to deal with snowflakes. The seacoast usually gets the snow a bit later according to the data provided.

To clarify, this map isn’t the average date of the first observed snowfall, according to Climate.gov. It’s the date by which there’s a 50% chance at least 0.1” of snow will have accumulated based on historical patterns from 1981-2010.
