Massachusetts State Agency Warns Boston Drivers in Halloween Themed Video Not to Get ‘Storrowed’
You Need to Know This About Driving in Boston, Massachusetts
If you've not heard the term "Storrowed," you are probably new to the area. You need to be in the know, especially if you are driving a moving truck.
Every year, mostly in September because of all the colleges in the city with students moving in, trucks from outside of Bean Town have ignored all the signage before entering tunnels. As a result, trucks will get 'Storrowed.'
The definition of getting 'Storrowed' is ignoring all the warning signs while driving a moving truck and plowing into the tunnel and hoping for the best. If the truck is higher than the clearance of the tunnel, the truck will get stuck or the roof will be ripped off.
To try to eliminate the danger, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation created a 'horror movie trailer.'
Part of the voice over says, "They ignored the signs and got .... STORROWED!"
Last year, according to nbcboston.com, the City of Boston put up new signs to help with this problem.
You can get 'Storrowed' on, obviously, Storrow Drive, Soldiers Field Road in Boston, also on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts. But not before you have seen about a million signs warning you about the clearance height.
New Hampshire also has a similar bridge in Dover called the 'can opener' located on Broadway, not far from Red's Shoe Barn.
Bostonians have become so used to these crashes, one reporter has named them depending on the outcome:
- The Wedge - the truck is just stuck. a/k/a the Proper Storrowing
- The Tin Can - The Crunch from Above
- The Tin Foil - When the truck leaves the top of the truck outside of the tunnel and it looks like tin foil
- The Leaner - The Truck hits the tunnel and tip to one side or the other
Have you ever been witness to one of these crashes in Boston or Dover?
