New Hampshire Governor Sununu’s Life-Saving Act and What He Was Thinking About the Most
Hampton Beach, New Hampshire Seafood Festival
Well, this was unexpected.
New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu attended the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, as he does every year, but I'm sure he didn't expect to save a life.
Every one would have understood if he didn't attend, as it was a tough weekend for him with the announcement of his Mother's passing, according to his X account.
Turns out, however, it's a really good thing he was there. He performed the Heimlich maneuver on a man choking on a piece of lobster at the lobster roll eating competition.
According to WMUR, Christian Moreno was one of the contestants in the lobster roll eating contest. Governor Sununu, who was on the Seashell stage at the time, saw that Christian was signaling for help.
Because there was so much commotion going on, no one noticed that Christian was in distress. The Governor knew that time was of the essence, so he jumped into action.
The Governor wrapped his arms around Christian from behind him and began to give him the Heimlich maneuver.
It took a few tries to get the piece of lobster up and out, but eventually, it worked and Christian went back to the competition. (What?)
What Was the New Hampshire Governor Thinking About the Most?
When I talked to Governor Sununu, he said that he knew he had to jump in as time was of the essence. He also said that while he was helping this guy, the primary thing on this mind was to keep him upright.
If Christian passed out and fell to the ground, the Governor said, it would be harder to administer the Heimlich to get the food out of his airway. That's why he had such a good grip on him.
Hampton Fire Department
The Governor also gives a lot of credit to the Hampton Fire Department who also assisted.
Everyone should know how to do the Heimlich. You never know when you'll need it! Here are the instructions, according to massgeneralbrigham.org.
- Stand behind the choking person
- Wrap your arms around the torso from the back
- Make a fist with one hand and grab it with the other
- Put your hands just above the belly and below the ribcage
- Pull in and up on to force the air out of the lungs and get the blockage out.
- Repeat up to 5 times
Have you ever had to give the Heimlich?
