You may soon hear audio alerts for shark sightings.

Local beaches are looking into installing loudspeakers to alert beachgoers and swimmers to shark sightings along the shore.

A Boston company, Acoustic Technology Inc, (ATI Systems) has offered up a proposal to install the loudspeakers, according to whdh.com.  The Barnstable County Commission is reviewing the proposal, the news station reported, and officials are looking into several ways to warn the public of the increasing threat of sharks in the water.

Just recently, local beaches such as Head of the Meadow in Truro were closed due to shark sightings.

It has yet to be determined what the message will be, but something like “Evacuate the water” seems likely, Bob McLaughlin of ATI told the news station.

According to whdh.com, more than 12 sharks have been tagged this season.  The shark population is growing and anything to keep swimmers safe seems reasonable at this point.

Stay safe at our beaches, be alert and aware and remember to never swim alone.
