The Durham fireworks have been funded for the past few years by The Great Bay Rotary Club of Durham, but that isn't going to happen this year.

The fireworks, which have been blasted off at Cowell Stadium, cost about $13,000 per show, and the funds have run dry.

In an article at Fosters.com:

"Club Treasurer and 14-year member George Rief said a diminishing membership and fewer donations are to blame. Membership had typically been around 40 people, Rief said, but now membership is about half that."

It does take a lot of money and man-power to hold events like this, and in cash strapped cities and towns, difficult decisions have to be made.

As the saying goes "you don't miss the water until the well runs dry". Perhaps this might pertain to a fireworks display over the 4th of July Weekend, or lack thereof, and solutions can be found to bring them back.
