Due to the mild temperatures this winter, officials were planning to close the rink this coming weekend. But due to problems with the ice chiller, the rink is now closed for the year.

According to Seacoastonline:

"Strawbery Banke closed its popular outdoor ice-skating rink for the season on Monday because of “possible vandalism” to the ice chiller.

Museum officials said sometime Sunday night or early Monday morning “the valve on the chiller glycol tank was opened and enough of the refrigerant leaked out that the chiller shut down.”

Police are investigating, including reviewing surveillance footage from cameras near the rink.

Over 20,000 people have enjoyed skating on the ice at Strawbery Banke this season, despite the rain and mild temperatures.

If indeed it does turn out that vandals caused the rink to close early, it's a sad commentary. Private donations built the rink and are behind it's operating costs. A wonderful testament to the community.
