On July 1, it will be illegal for drivers in New Hampshire to use cellphones without a Bluetooth or similar hands-free communication device while driving. I say Praise Be!

In the past three months, I've been involved in 3 vehicle altercations that thankfully didn't involve any harm or damage. However, in each instance, the other driver involved was using their cellphone at the time of the close call.

Enough is enough, and I for one am glad this law is going into effect.

"The law makes the use of handheld electronic devices while operating a vehicle a “serious traffic offense.” First offenders will be charged a fine of $100, plus penalty assessment. Second offenders will be fined $250, while third offenses and on will cost drivers $500."

Distracted driving has become a serious issue, and hopefully this law will help deter this unsafe driving habit. I realize I've been driving for more than 30 years and things have changed, but the fact that you have to be aware of what you're doing behind the wheel hasn't. As far as I know, cars that drive themselves aren't flowing off the assembly lines.

I've always enjoyed the solitude that driving allows me. It was and remains one of the places that I can stay unplugged, not answer a phone or see what's trending. Driving relaxes me, always has.

Of course not everyone feels like I do, and I get in some instances there are some calls one just has to take. At least after July 1, they'll either have to take them safely or pay for it.
