Sing it with me, "Whalom Park, for a whale of a time!"

One of the favorite places of my childhood closed in the fall of 2000.  Whalom Park in Lunenburg, Massachusetts.

In the Summer, you could go on all the rides and make a day of it with the family.  Even in the Winter, the park would open up for winter fun with the skating rink.

The park closed in 2000 due to financial problems.  They sold to developers who built beautiful condos on the shores of Lake Whalom, according to telegram.com.

Remember the Roller Coaster at Whalom Park?

Whalom Park had a wooden roller coaster called the Flying Comet.  It was creaky, but that was part of the fun - it scared you half to death.

The Flying Comet was demolished on October 18, 2006, according to coasterpedia.net.

I don't know why I was so afraid on the flying coment.  Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH had and still has, "The Yankee Cannonball," also a wooden roller coaster, but that never bothered me very much.

Whalom Park Has a Museum

Whalom Park was a tradition for many families to visit for decades, so it makes sense that hearts were broken when it closed.  So much so that there is a Whalom Park museum where you can go and revisit all the old memories, according to telegram.com.

Lunenburg is about an hour and a half away from Portsmouth, NH, so I remember it was quite a haul to get there, but if you were a roller coaster enthusiast like me, it was worth the drive.
