A year from now, Starbucks hopes to have it's plan in place that would allow them to donate all of their leftover food to those in need.

Feeding America is made up of a national network of food banks. The idea did not come from the boardroom, but from behind the counter. Apparently some of the baristas started the idea.

This is a wonderful idea, and I'll gladly pay a little extra and seek out a local Starbucks because of this new policy. I drive by the Dover location everyday.

The company still has to work a few things out regarding how to keep the leftover food fresh. Starbucks spokesperson Erin Schaeffer addressed the situation:

"The challenge was finding a way to add fresh or perishable food, like breakfast sandwiches and salads to the donation pick up while preserving the food's quality throughout the process,"

The company is researching that topic, and has set a goal of giving away 5 million meals by the end of this year.
