The rabbit, estimated to be between 1 and 2 years old was fighting to stay alive when found, according to authorities.

A truly disturbing story has emerged involving a small rabbit. According to CBS 13 News, Raymond police said two kayakers found the rabbit in the Lamprey River on Sunday with a rope around her neck and a 5-pound weight attached to the other end of the rope.

Veterinarian Dr. Matthew Cobb told the news station that “she was pretty stressed and had clearly inhaled some of the river water."

The survival of the animal may come down to timing, according to Dr. Cobb, the news station reported.

“The rabbit is extremely lucky that somebody noticed and took the effort to help her out, because she wasn't going to make it otherwise,” Cobb told CBS 13.

Police have not come forward with formal charges, but according to CBS 13 News, they believe a juvenile may be involved after family members of the juvenile came forward, and animal cruelty charges are pending.

Candray Pet Care Center in Candia, is nursing the rabbit.
