J.C. Penney at Fox Run Mall in Newington, New Hampshire is Closing
For quite some time now, here on the Seacoast, we have known that the Fox Run Mall was purchased and the new owners were creating a new development of some kind.
A recent Portsmouth NH Facebook page posting showed CLOSING signs on the front doors of J.C. Penney. It seems the development plans are progressing and people are talking.
According to Fosters.com, J. C. Penney will close by May 25 of this year.

Here are some of the comments from the Portsmouth NH Facebook page:
Eileen said this about JC Penney Closing:
I think it’s a shame that we will have to drive 40 minutes to get to a mall going either north or south. I shopped frequently at JCPenney’s. I like to see what I’m buying, online You can’t tell the sizing or the material . Love JCPenney‘s home department - will definitely miss them and yes, unfortunately I think Macy’s will probably be the next to go.
Kimberly said the mall has so much potential
I wish so much they’d revamp this mall. It’s a good location with so much potential for businesses. I have always preferred going here. There are no decent eateries, seating and decor to get people in. Let’s face it, Malls need to revamp their original design to get people in the door again.
There were some comments about making this space a place for the whole community, including affordable housing, eateries and a faith center.
About a year and a half ago, WMUR reported that Torrington Properties purchased the Mall
Will Macy's be Next?
In March of 2024, according to NH Business Review, Macy's at the Fox Run Mall was a "very strong performer in the market." It's been almost a year and I wonder if that is still the case.
What do you think should happen with the space?
