Vermont's Own Ben & Jerry's Adds a New Dairy-Free Flavor
There are more and more people who cannot tolerate dairy in any way, shape, or form. Dairy wreaks havoc on our systems and prevents many of us from enjoying one of life's greatest gifts, Ben & Jerry Ice Cream. I'll spare you the details. I am happy to report, however, that they have come up with another non-dairy flavor, Strawberry Cheezecake, made with Oat Milk.
This non-dairy flavor is not the first, by far, for Ben & Jerry's. There are many others. I love the fact that the company has embraced the "lactose intolerant" of the world, especially one with a cow as part of the brand. They have a wide variety of non-dairy options of their classic flavors, including Cherry Garcia, Phish Food, and Peanut Butter Half Baked.
The company says that it tried out 70 different formulas before settling on the Oat Milk base. I guess there's more than one base to use for non-dairy ice cream, not just oat milk. They also use almond milk and sunflower butter. Yeah, just because it's made from healthier ingredients doesn't mean that it's local. Believe me, you can gain weight with that assumption.
Two things about dairy that you may not like:
1) Humans are the only species that will consume milk after they have been weaned. Even cows will send their calves out to pasture to eat grass after they have fattened up from the milk.
2) I believe that adult consumption of milk was invented out of necessity. Think about it. Back in the day before the invention of refrigeration, grocery stores, and birth control, farmers had to feed all their children that kept popping out somehow, someway. Since we are a crafty species, somebody at some point looked at all that milk that the cows were producing, and thought to themselves, "There's got to be a way that I can feed my babies too." Lo and behold, a whole food group was invented. It's just my theory, but it's a pretty good one if you ask me.
It's a pretty good bet that if you try a non-dairy Ben & Jerry's product, you're going to like it, and if it's easier on your system, then why not?
