Beginning Thursday, Portsmouth residents will not be allowed to water their lawns.

The City Council voted to ban the watering as the extreme drought continues.

Residents will be allowed to water their vegetable garden, flowers, and nurseries using hand held watering containers.

Golf courses will be allowed to water their tees and greens, but not the fairways or rough.

This action ends the odd/even restriction on watering, and also gives the authority to the city staff to enforce the ban.

Portsmouth received just 1.41 inches of rain in August.
