Update on Mink the Bear; 1 of the Cubs Has Been Found in NH

We've got an update on Mink the bear.

I have been following her story for years and was saddened to hear that she had passed away and her three cubs were wandering alone in the forest.

Mink had been outfitted with a tracking device and has been followed by Andrew Timmins, the bear project leader from New Hampshire’s Fish and Game, according to sfgate.com.

As I wrote last week, when the signal from Mink’s tracking device stopped moving, officials went on a mission to find out what happened to her. Sadly, they found her body on a gravel bar on the Mascoma River near Old Pine Cemetery.

Initially, they thought she had died after being struck by a vehicle and succumbed to her injuries but a complete examination of her remains left officials with quite a surprise.

The big surprise after her death is that, upon a complete examination, Mink was in her late 20s or early 30s and died of natural causes, according to the article. Officials had estimated her to be in her early teens.

Something always brought her back to the Hanover and Lebanon area.  Year after year with many litters of her cubs.

The good news is that with the help of local residents, one of her cubs has been captured and will be taken care of through the winter at the Kilham Bear Center in Lyme, SFgate.com stated.

The 8-month-old cub still has two siblings roaming around but officials are confident they will be located because the residents have been regularly calling in reports of sightings.

I would be so happy to hear the siblings are being united to spend the winter together.  Let’s find these cubs.
