A truck driven by someone not familiar with Dover struck the railroad trestle over Broadway Monday morning.

The crash into the trestle near St. John Street happened around 9 a.m. and caused big traffic issues for about two hours, according to Dover Police spokesman Brandt Dolleman. The driver was following another driver and was not aware of the 9 feet 6 inch clearance on the bridge.

"This happens a lot with these rental vehicles. People aren't used to driving these bigger vehicles and sometimes fail to notice the height sign. When you're driving a regular car you don't pay attention to them," Dolleman told Seacoast Current.

A picture showed a heavily damaged Penske box truck with the rear nearly destroyed and exposing the items being transported.

Dolleman said the driver will not be charged.

"She's going to be let off with a warning considering the amount of damage she's done to the truck and her personal possessions. I don't think a traffic summons is going to be helpful in this case," Dolleman said.

The bridge did not appear to be damaged although he expects the Boston & Maine Railroad will inspect it just to be sure, according to Dolleman.

"That bridge has been run into many times and has yet to sustain any significant damage," Dolleman said.

Rockingham Alert was first to report the incident.
